A 73-year-old patient was injured in the night leading up to Wednesday at the Hospital of the Barmherzige Brüder in Graz when she lit a cigarette during oxygen therapy on the internal medicine ward, triggering a deflagration.

What happened in the night

The bang from the deflagration was perceived by the nursing staff in the hospital at around 2:30 a.m. As the hospital confirmed, citing a report by the "Kleine Zeitung," the smoldering cigarette ignited the medical oxygen, which led to the explosion. "Die glimmende Zigarette setzte den Sauerstoff in Brand und es kam zu einer Verpuffung," the hospital confirmed the incident.
