President Santiago Peña has declared a national holiday in Paraguay after the country's national football team defeated the German side 4:3 in a penalty shootout.
The Paraguayan president reacted immediately to his country's sporting success at the ongoing FIFA World Cup. On the platform X, Peña wrote following the 4:3 penalty shootout against the DFB team: "Paraguay gibt niemals auf!" Shortly afterward, he declared a national holiday for the following day and thanked the team for the "enormous joy" they had brought to millions of Paraguayans.
In the capital Asunción, tens of thousands of people gathered to celebrate their team's triumph. The atmosphere was jubilant, with many fans wearing the red and white jersey color of the "Albirroja." President Peña spoke amid the cheering crowd and said: "Today this suffering has finally turned into an immense joy." With the slogan "Holiday, damn it!" he captured the emotion of the nation.
