The Austrian parcel levy will cost up to 2.40 euros per shipment from October, including 20 percent VAT, and according to the Trade Association will affect 16 large online retailers and marketplaces such as Amazon, Otto, and Temu.
The controversial Austrian parcel levy has now been officially quantified: From October, the levy including 20 percent VAT will amount to up to 2.40 euros per parcel. This was first reported by the "Kronen Zeitung." As a result, the burden on consumers, originally communicated as two euros, will be higher than initially assumed due to the tax.
Amount and Calculation of the Levy
The Ministry of Finance justifies the amount of the levy with EU legal requirements. "This is an EU legal requirement and not a specific feature of the parcel tax," the ministry told the "Krone." "The rules of VAT law apply to the parcel levy." The levy is therefore treated like a regular tax and is subject to the full VAT rate.
