Austria's new €2 package tax on large online retailers sparks debate between e-commerce giants and local businesses.
The tax applies to online sales platforms with annual revenues exceeding €100 million, aiming to level the playing field for brick-and-mortar stores. 'The whole world invests in innovation, only Austria taxes the future of trade,' says Rainer Will of the Austrian Trade Association.
Shopping center operators support the measure. Peter Schaider, who manages two major Vienna shopping centers, argues: 'I see two euros as ridiculous. The fee should be doubled to four euros.' The Austrian Council of Shopping Places, representing 80-85% of shopping center owners, backs the tax.
Bookstores also express support. 'From our perspective, the tax isn't bad,' says one bookseller. Many small orders under €25 will now face this additional charge, which some retailers believe will make local shopping more competitive.
