Federal Family Minister Karin Prien has presented a draft law aimed at shortening the parental allowance benefit period from 14 to 12 months and creating incentives for greater involvement of fathers.

The draft provides that in future, three months of parental allowance will be reserved for each parent, and a further six months can be divided flexibly between mother and father. This emerges from the document, which the Politico portal cited. It states verbatim: "Drei Monate sind zukünftig für jedes Elternteil reserviert. Sechs weitere Monate können zwischen den Eltern flexibel aufgeteilt werden." The benefit can only be drawn in full if both parents take at least three months of career break.

Until now, parental allowance has been paid for up to 14 months, provided that each parent takes at least two months of caregiving time. With the reform, this period would therefore be shortened by two months. According to the draft, single parents should be able to receive up to twelve months of full parental allowance. At the same time, the minimum benefit rises from 300 to 330 euros, and the maximum from 1,800 to 1,900 euros per month.
