The founder of China's underground Zion Church, Ezra Jin Mingri, has been released after nearly nine months in detention and reunited with his family in Los Angeles, less than two months after US President Donald Trump raised his case with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri was arrested last October as part of one of the largest raids against a single church in China in decades. A total of 18 Zion Church leaders were taken into custody at the time, according to human rights activists. According to Chinese accounts, the release was made on the occasion of the American Independence Day. The human rights organization ChinaAid said Jin Mingri has since arrived in Los Angeles, California.
