Beijing, 15 May 2026
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met in Beijing on Wednesday to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss energy cooperation, days after a visit by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The two leaders reaffirmed their strategic partnership and agreed to extend a friendship treaty first signed in 2001, according to Chinese state media. Putin also invited Xi to visit Russia in 2027, marking continued high-level engagement between the two nations.
Energy cooperation was a central focus of the talks, with Putin noting significant progress in oil and gas sector collaboration. Russia's oil exports to China grew by 35% in the first quarter of 2026, and Russia remains one of China's largest natural gas suppliers.
