Xi Receives Trump with Warning of "Extremely Dangerous Phase" in Bilateral Relations

The Taiwan issue remains a central point of contention between the two nations. US government spokesperson Michelle Lee countered Xi’s remarks, stating: "China’s military threats are the sole source of instability in the Taiwan Strait and the wider Indo-Pacific."

Economy and Global Challenges

In addition to geopolitical tensions, the meeting also addressed economic issues, including Chinese market access for US companies. The White House later described it as a "good meeting" and highlighted alignment in some areas: "Both sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to ensure the free flow of energy trade."

Xi spoke of a "new direction" in bilateral relations and pointed to the "volatile and turbulent international situation." The question, he said, is whether major powers can avoid war and "jointly tackle global challenges to provide greater stability for the world."

Personal Gestures and Anniversary Greetings

Despite the tense topics, both sides also exchanged personal gestures. Trump referred to Xi as a "great leader" and said, "It’s an honor to be your friend." He also praised a group of children who had greeted him: "I thought the children were 'great,'" he later remarked.

Xi congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of the US and stressed that the two countries should be "partners, not rivals." Huang, another participant, called the summit "one of the most significant in human history."
