Patrik Schick announces retirement from Czech national team

The 30-year-old announced his departure from the national team jersey through a post on Instagram. Schick explained there that the decision did not arise on a spontaneous whim. "I trage diese Idee schon länger mit mir herum und habe lange und intensiv darüber nachgedacht", he wrote. In doing so, he framed the step as the result of a longer process of maturation rather than as a pure reaction to the World Cup debacle.

In 56 appearances for the Czech Republic, Schick scored 26 goals and was for years one of the defining attacking players of his country. His move to Bayer Leverkusen established him in the Bundesliga, from where he also played a central role for the national team. The striker is part of the Werksklub's squad and is under contract there.

With the group-stage exit, a World Cup that fell short of expectations on the sporting side came to an end for the Czech Republic. The 0:3 defeat against Mexico sealed their early elimination on the final matchday, after the matches against the other group opponents had also ended without victory. The single point came from a draw; no further points were added.
