South Korea has won its opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Zapopan 2-1 (0-0) against the Czech Republic, celebrating a successful start in Group A.

At the Guadalajara Stadium, the match did not pick up pace until the second half. The first notable chance fell to Patrik Schick of Bayer Leverkusen in the 14th minute, but the Czech side remained harmless early on. Tomas Soucek also missed the target from a corner in the 22nd minute. Pavel Šulc was pulled by his jersey in the 27th minute following an intervention by Han-beom Lee, but the incident had no major consequences.

Shortly after the break, Jae-Sung Lee of FSV Mainz 05 was presented with a good scoring opportunity in the 49th minute, but he squandered it. Czech captain Ladislav Krejci did better in the 59th minute, heading in a long throw-in from Vladimir Coufal on the right side at the five-yard box to give the Czechs the lead. It was the Eastern Europeans' first clear scoring chance of the match.
