The U.S. Department of Defense has added Alibaba, BYD, Baidu and more than a dozen other prominent Chinese companies to its list of designated Chinese military companies, expanding the roster to 188 entities from roughly 130 a year earlier.

The update, published on Monday and scheduled to appear in the Federal Register on Wednesday, was carried out under Section 1260H of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, which requires the Pentagon to identify Chinese companies operating directly or indirectly in the United States that it says support China's military-civil fusion strategy. The Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment determined that the newly named firms met the criteria for designation, the Pentagon said.
