A pilot project by Diakonie Austria on "mental health days" at schools received encouraging feedback from teachers and school leaders, according to the project leaders, while Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr announced additional school psychologists.
The "Mental Health Day" project was trialed at several school locations, according to Diakonie Austria, to make it easier to deal with psychological stress in everyday school life. The aim was to create low-threshold spaces for conversations about mental health and to raise teachers' awareness of warning signs. Diakonie views the feedback from participating schools as confirmation of the chosen approach.
Martin Schenk, co-initiator of the project, spoke of a "durchaus positiven Bilanz". Teachers had reported that students took up the offer and allowed conversations about stress, fears, and family worries. School leaders had also spoken out in favor of permanently embedding the format.
