Monaco, 22 August 2026
The five-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia won the 9.4-kilometer short individual time trial to open the Vuelta a España in Monaco and relegated the British rider Ethan Hayter to second place with a margin of nine hundredths of a second.
The time trial ran through Pogacar's adopted home of Monaco and formed the opening of the Spanish Grand Tour. Pogacar, who has won the Tour de France five times in recent years, used the technical course for an early demonstration of his form and secured the first bonus seconds of the Vuelta.
The remaining places were taken exclusively by British riders: Hayter, Josh Tarling and a third rider from Great Britain. The gap to Hayter amounted to only nine hundredths of a second, underscoring the narrow margins at the top of the field.
