The developer Niantic has collected around 30 billion environmental images over the years via the scan function in Pokémon Go – images that are now apparently also being used for GPS-free navigation of military drones, a circumstance that is drawing sharp criticism from ethicists and politicians.

The accusations are based on a report by the trade magazine DroneXL as well as research by the Dutch newspaper Trouw. According to these, in 2021 Niantic integrated a new feature into the augmented reality game Pokémon Go: those who film their surroundings with the smartphone camera at so-called Pokéstops and send the recordings to the manufacturer receive a reward in the game. Behind the scenes, this created a data treasure trove of, by the company's own account, around 30 billion scans – images of streets, parks, landmarks, and other civilian places where many people gather.
