Police arrest 49-year-old suspect after around 60 car break-ins across five federal states

Modus operandi and stolen goods

The suspect's modus operandi apparently followed a similar pattern. The offences occurred over an extended period of time, spread across several regions. According to police, an analysis of the crime scenes revealed overlaps that brought the man into focus as a possible serial offender.

The investigators evaluated traces left on the vehicles and matched them with previously reported cases. The analysis of surveillance footage and tips from the public also played a role, according to police. Ultimately, surveillance operations led to the arrest.

A spokesperson for the investigating department stated that the arrest was the result of cross-state cooperation. Since the crime scenes spanned several federal states, the state criminal investigation offices and the responsible Interior Ministry had exchanged information to identify the perpetrator.

Cross-state investigations

Following his arrest, the 49-year-old was transferred to a correctional facility. He is being investigated for aggravated theft in a particularly serious case. According to the authorities, they do not yet have any conclusive findings regarding possible additional accomplices or connections to other countries.

Police are now examining whether the suspect could also be responsible for older, previously unsolved break-ins. Victims who have not yet filed a report after a break-in are asked to do so. At the same time, police are looking for possible buyers of the stolen vehicle parts.

The investigations cover a total of five federal states: Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and Upper Austria. This makes it one of the larger-scale break-in series to have been solved in Austria in recent memory.

Should the suspicions against the man be confirmed, the investigators expect indictments in several federal states. The responsible public prosecutor's office is also examining possible connections to the Hungarian border region.
