Police have arrested a 49-year-old Hungarian citizen who is believed to have broken into cars at least 60 times across five Austrian federal states.
According to the investigators, the arrest followed surveillance operations and targeted inquiries. The suspect was caught in the act and is in custody, police said. The public prosecutor's office will now handle the further proceedings.
The break-in series reportedly stretched across five federal states. Based on an analysis of the reports filed, the affected areas were Vienna, Lower Austria, Styria including the Graz metropolitan area, Burgenland around Klingenbach, as well as Upper Austria. Cases were also registered in Brunn am Gebirge, south of Vienna.
Police assume that the arrested man is responsible for at least 60 offences. According to the current state of the investigation, light modules were stolen from the vehicles during the break-ins, among other items. Whether other objects were also stolen is part of the ongoing investigation.
