Police Shoot Escaped Tiger Near Leipzig After Attack Leaves Man Seriously Injured

The Leipzig public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation against the tiger's owner, a 52-year-old woman identified as former circus trainer Carmen Zander, on suspicion of negligent bodily harm by omission. Vanessa Fink, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office, stated the injured man remains hospitalized and is currently unable to provide testimony.

Authorities noted repeated prior allegations regarding the conditions under which tigers were kept at the Schkeuditz facility. The property has housed big cats since 2016, initially as a winter quarters but transitioning to year-round occupancy approximately five years ago.

Community Reactions

Residents described scenes of panic as news of the loose tiger spread. "Our idyll was shattered yesterday," local resident Silvia Kaempf told the German Press Agency. Another neighbor, Janin Nordengrün, recounted being told to shelter indoors: "Someone came and said we should all go into our cottages because a tiger was loose."

Business owners near the facility expressed unease about the tigers' proximity to residential areas. One merchant, who asked not to be named, said employees routinely checked for safety from their cars before exiting. "As a layperson, I’d say this isn’t the right location to keep tigers near homes and a riding stable," they added.

Legal and Safety Measures

Under German regulations, private tiger keepers must provide at least 200 square meters of outdoor space per animal, with an additional 100 square meters required for each additional adult tiger. Authorities emphasized that no other animals had escaped but planned drone surveillance to confirm the area’s security.

Carmen Zander, the tiger’s owner, called the incident "every animal trainer’s nightmare" in an interview with MDR SACHSEN. Meanwhile, police assured the public that "no further danger exists."
