Toronto, July 2, 2026

On the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of former Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, Portuguese fans want to make the World Cup round of 16 match against Croatia on Friday in Toronto (kickoff 1:00 a.m. CEST) a gesture of remembrance with white balloons and applause in the 21st minute.

Diogo Jota, who played for FC Liverpool from 2026 onward and wore jersey number 20 there, had died in a car accident on July 3, 2025. In the Portuguese national team, he wore the number 21. Precisely this number is now meant to symbolically reappear in the stadium in Toronto: Portuguese supporters are planning to applaud in the 21st minute of play and to release white balloons into the night sky above the venue beforehand.
