Portuguese national football players are wearing a black armband at the World Cup in the USA to honour their teammate Diogo Jota, who died in an accident.

The Portugal national team began their tournament on Thursday (local time) at the World Cup base in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. At the first press conference at the base, midfielder Vitinha of French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain said the team would remember the late striker throughout the entire World Cup – with a black armband on the wrist. "We know how very much to appreciate that," Vitinha said with regard to the squad's gesture.
