Severe thunderstorm cell causes damage to buildings and roofs in Thangelstedt

As the German Weather Service explained, it was a spatially very confined thunderstorm cell with violent wind. Meteorologists refer to such a phenomenon as a so-called downburst-like structure, in which strong downdrafts at ground level can cause severe damage.

DWD's explanation

The exact extent of the damage is currently being recorded by the authorities in the Weimarer Land district. The fire department and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) were deployed according to initial reports, in order to secure loose roof parts and cordon off hazardous areas.

Residents reported a very short but extremely intense weather event. Within just a few minutes, the storm snapped trees and dislodged roof tiles. The DWD pointed out that such local thunderstorm cells occur with little lead time and are difficult to forecast.

Notice from the town to residents

The town of Blankenhain called on residents not to enter damaged buildings on their own initiative and to report damage to the municipal administration. According to initial findings, supply lines were not interrupted.

According to the German Weather Service, the thunderstorm cell was confined to the Thangelstedt area and its immediate surroundings; no comparable damage was reported in neighboring towns. The experts are monitoring further weather developments in the region.

The incident is reminiscent of earlier local severe weather events in the Weimarer Land district, in which considerable damage to buildings also occurred within a few minutes. Weather experts advise seeking shelter quickly in solid buildings when the DWD issues warnings and securing loose objects outdoors.

In the evening, the town administration intended to publish an initial assessment of the damage together with the DWD. The amount of any possible insurance payouts was also still unclear, as the damage assessment was ongoing.
