Premiere of "Madama Butterfly" in Gars: How an Emergency Became a Triumph

The production was staged by Matthias von Stegmann, with the Japanese-inspired set designed by David Gamel and the costumes by Laura Madgé Hörmann. In the title role of Cio-Cio-San, Kristiane Kaiser could be experienced, who, according to critics, sang the aria "Un bel di, vedremo" with unsettling intensity. Alongside her were Daria Sushkova as Suzuki and Paolo Rúmetz as Sharpless. Christian Drescher took on the role of Goro, Evgeny Solodovnikov that of Bonzo, and Simion Novac sang Yamadori.

The premiere initially proceeded as planned: tenor Vitaliy Kovalchuk sang the opening aria "Dovunque al mondo," but already appeared strained. After the first act, according to the house, he suffered a severe acute allergic reaction and could no longer continue vocally. Even in the duet with Cio-Cio-San, his voice failed. The audience gave Kovalchuk great applause for his courageous effort.

Double Casting as Salvation

In this situation, the double casting concept introduced by artistic director Clemens Unterreiner came into play: Argentine tenor Gabriel Arce, who was already part of the production's ensemble, was brought from the hotel to the castle in record time and took over the role of Pinkerton from the intermission onward without preparation. He sang, among others, "Addio fiorito asil" with a timbre that reminded critics of flowing honey. It was the first time in the festival's history that two different tenors took on the title role on a single evening.

Unterreiner was deeply moved after the performance. "A weight has been lifted from my heart! It is of course the absolute worst-case scenario when a lead performer drops out at a premiere. But thank God I introduced a double casting in Gars, and it was precisely this concept that saved us tonight," he said. Regarding Arce, he added: "The fact that Gabriel Arce then rushed over from the hotel in record time and brought the performance home so brilliantly makes me incredibly proud. That was opera drama in the flesh: Let's Opera!"

Reactions and Outlook

The audience's reaction was accordingly: minutes-long standing ovations, with guests celebrating late into the night on the festival grounds. Unterreiner, who himself is an active singer and member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera, had planned substitutes for the central roles from the outset – a concept that proved to be a lifesaver on this evening.

Further performances of "Madama Butterfly" are scheduled with alternating casts through August 1. In 2027, the festival will continue the series with Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème." Jihun Kim was also part of the ensemble of the current production.

The opera's plot revolves around the fifteen-year-old Butterfly, who submits to an American man and is later abandoned with a small son. Central themes include human suffering, the degradation of a woman from another culture into an object, and colonialism. The Gars Castle production processes these thematic threads within a delicately Japanese-toned stage design.

Overall, the evening offered an example of how an unforeseen emergency can be transformed into a triumph through prudent foresight and willingness to improvise – and of how a festival audience responds to such opera drama in the flesh.
