SPÖ leader Andreas Babler announced in a press release that he wants to abolish the private hospital fund Prikraf; a fact check by several media outlets shows that the SPÖ's reasoning is untenable on several points.
Background: Function of the Prikraf
The SPÖ, under its federal party chairman Andreas Babler, issued a press release demanding the dissolution of the private hospital fund, known as Prikraf for short. The move was justified, among other things, with references to cosmetic surgery, pensions and deportations that are allegedly processed through the fund.
However, a comprehensive fact check that systematically examines these subject areas arrives at a more nuanced picture. According to it, the criticized points are on a significantly smaller scale than the SPÖ's political communication suggests.
The Prikraf was established in 2002 to standardize billing between private hospitals and social insurance carriers. Since then, the fund has financed inpatient stays in private hospitals, provided the public sector has to cover the costs – for example, after accidents or for certain operations.
