Protein powder prices in Germany jump 40 to 60 percent as demand outpaces supply

Why prices keep climbing

Higher-quality protein concentrates such as WPC (whey protein concentrate) and WPI (whey protein isolate) are particularly scarce. The Quality Group, the company behind the brands More Nutrition and ESN, also said it is feeling the pressure. A spokeswoman said whey is a by-product of cheese production and cannot be expanded at will, describing the situation as "eine Marktkorrektur in einem strukturell enger gewordenen Molkenproteinmarkt." She added that companies must absorb higher costs to remain viable: "Unternehmen müssen all dies tragen, um zukunftsfähig zu bleiben."

Consumer demand has surged in parallel. Market researcher YouGov said 4.6 million German households purchased protein powder at least once recently, a 66 percent increase within a year. The trend is driven mainly by consumers born between 1982 and 2011, according to the data.

A demand boom driven by weight-loss drugs

Keunecke pointed to demand from the United States as a major factor. She said U.S. appetite for protein-rich products has grown recently, partly as a side effect of medications such as weight-loss injections. The drugs reduce feelings of hunger and thereby help reduce weight, and patients are advised to eat a protein-rich diet to counteract muscle loss during weight reduction: "Diese führt zu einem verringerten Hungergefühl und trägt damit dazu bei, das Gewicht zu reduzieren."

Retailers are already reporting availability problems. Drogeriemarkt chain dm said that for especially popular items, "vereinzelt zu temporären Lieferengpässen" can occur. Rewe likewise said that for certain protein powder brands there is currently limited product availability. Other protein-rich foods, including skyr and tofu, have faced frequent shortages in German retail in recent months.

Retailers and producers respond

Suppliers are responding. Dairy company DMK has expanded its production capacities and is investing roughly 26 million euros in a new whey protein facility in Edewecht, Lower Saxony. A DMK spokeswoman said the company and its farmers are facing rising costs in many areas. The Quality Group likewise acknowledged that the high whey powder prices are partly a consequence of tight global supply.

Industry experts say the current squeeze is not a passing spike. Anton of the European Milk Industry Association framed it as the result of structural pressure on the whey market, while The Quality Group described it as a market correction in a structurally tighter segment. For now, both producers and analysts expect prices to remain elevated, even as production is ramped up to meet the protein boom.
