Protein powder has become significantly more expensive in Germany, with prices climbing 40 to 60 percent since the start of the year amid surging demand and tight global supplies of whey.
Kerstin Keunecke, said the cost of the powder, which is mostly made from dried whey and mixed with water or milk to make shakes, has risen sharply since January. "Die Preise für das Pulver seien seit Januar um 40 bis 60 Prozent gestiegen," she said, citing strong demand and changing dietary habits. Whey powder prices in Germany have been climbing continuously since mid-2023, she added.
Alexander Anton, said the upward trend has accelerated since the beginning of the current year. He stressed that the German market remains adequately supplied, but warned that prices are unlikely to fall back. "Der deutsche Markt sei zwar ausreichend versorgt. Dennoch rechnet Anton nicht damit, dass Proteinpulver wieder günstiger wird," according to a report.
