Vienna, July 6, 2026
For the launch of the new Psychotherapy Master's program in the 2026/27 academic year, around 1,300 applications have been received in Austria, while the number of available places at public universities is limited.
The new Master's program forms the centerpiece of the first reform of psychotherapy training since the 1990s. A suitable Bachelor's program is now followed by a two-year Master's program at a public university. This is intended to standardize training and bring it into line with international standards.
The number of places offered is, however, modest. In the West-Middle consortium, which includes the Universities of Salzburg, Linz, and Innsbruck as well as the Medical University of Innsbruck, 200 places are available—by far the most in Austria. The consortia of the University and Medical University of Graz offer 140 places, the University for Continuing Education Krems offers 80, and 40 each are available in the Vienna consortium and another constellation.
