Vladimir Putin has placed the assets remaining in Russia of the retail group Metro under forced administration, as several media outlets report, citing Kremlin decrees.

The Russian leadership justifies the step with the protection of business operations and the preservation of value for the shareholders. Metro Russia is "a large business of significance for the group's overall portfolio," according to the Kremlin. The decision was also in the interest of preserving the company's value for its shareholders.

The forced administration follows a pattern that the Kremlin has applied since the beginning of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022 against numerous Western companies. First, foreign firms were pressured to sell their Russian subsidiaries cheaply to local investors; now the state is directly intervening in the administration of the assets.
