Former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has sparked a racism debate with a remark about the French national football team just hours before the World Cup semifinal between Spain and France in Dallas.

Background: Rajoy's guest contribution in "El Debate"

Rajoy, who was Spain's head of government from 2011 to 2018 and sat in parliament for the conservative People's Party (PP), wrote in a guest contribution for the online outlet "El Debate" that France indeed has a squad at the highest level – "without Frenchmen." With the wording, he alluded to the fact that numerous players on the French team have a migration background. Rajoy lost his office in 2018 through a vote of no confidence.
