ÖFB team manager Ralf Rangnick lamented his team's difficult schedule after the 0:3 defeat to European champions Spain in the World Cup round of 16, while also calling for Austria to participate regularly in major tournaments.

The loss to the titleholders ended Austria's first World Cup appearance since 1998. "But that's all 'if only, if only, bicycle chain'," said Rangnick in Los Angeles. To avoid the world number three in the first knockout round, the Austrians would have had to win their group. "Otherwise I wouldn't know what we could have done much differently," added the team manager.

The choice of the team base on the US West Coast had been "absolutely right" – both regarding training conditions and the climatic circumstances. "A number of things happened over the course of the tournament that certainly didn't make the task any easier for his team," Rangnick summarized the circumstances. "Overall, the team once again showed how much it sticks together."
