Elon Musk publicly congratulated the AfD after its electoral victory in Saxony-Anhalt, while Austrian FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl interpreted the win as the end of the political firewall.
The reactions to the AfD's victory in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt reach far beyond Germany. Elon Musk extended congratulations to the party, as reports about his online activity indicate. The tech entrepreneur's response fits a pattern of right-wing populist sympathies that Musk has already demonstrated in several European countries.
In parallel, Herbert Kickl, leader of Austria's Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), gave an interview to broadcaster OE24 in which he read the election result as having significance beyond Germany's borders. Kickl told OE24 that the AfD's victory marked the end of the firewall – that is, the refusal of virtually all other parties to cooperate with the AfD.
