Real Madrid's David Alaba was given an emotional send-off during their 4-2 home win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, as the Austrian captain left the pitch to a standing ovation in what is expected to be his last appearance at the Bernabeu.

The match result was meaningless from a table standings perspective, with Real Madrid already assured of a Champions League spot. Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Jude Bellingham doubled the lead before halftime, Kylian Mbappe made it three shortly after the break, and Brahim Diaz sealed the victory in the 88th minute.

The day’s significance, however, lay far beyond the scoreline. In the 70th minute, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa signalled for David Alaba to be substituted, triggering an eruption of noise from the home crowd.
