Madrid, 12 June 2026

Real Madrid has confirmed the appointment of José Mourinho as head coach on a three-year contract, with the Portuguese manager returning to the Spanish club 13 years after his first stint ended in 2013.

The announcement was made by Real Madrid, ending a saga that had begun the previous evening when Benfica Lisbon disclosed the deal on the platform X. According to Benfica, the record Spanish champion will pay 15 million euros in compensation for Mourinho's release. Real Madrid had not initially confirmed the transfer before issuing its own statement.

Mourinho, 63, succeeds Alvaro Arbeloa, who was unable to lead Real Madrid back to success. The club finished behind archrival FC Barcelona in the league standings, and under Arbeloa there were repeated conflicts between players. The 63-year-old was already on the books of Benfica, where his contract would have had one more year remaining, with Benfica confirming on Tuesday evening that he had agreed to the transfer to Madrid.

Return after 13 years

Mourinho's appointment brings him back to familiar territory. He was previously head coach of Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning the league title in 2012 and the Spanish Cup in 2011. His coaching career has also included FC Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Manchester United, with Benfica Lisbon listed as his most recent club.
