Real Wages Q2 2026: +1.5 Percent According to Destatis

Looking at individual sectors, the picture according to Destatis is nevertheless uneven. In some branches of the economy, real wage growth remained below average, while other areas benefited above average. The Federal Office initially did not provide differentiated data on individual sectors.

The development is set against a backdrop of a combination of sustained nominal wage dynamics and an inflation rate that, while still positive, is lower compared to previous years. Consumer prices had temporarily exceeded seven percent in 2022 and 2023 but have since declined significantly.

For the purchasing power of employees, the current increase means a further, albeit moderate, improvement. Economists at the Hans-Böckler Foundation view the rise as a sign that wage developments are once again aligning more closely with general price increases.

Malte Lübker, wage analyst at the Hans-Böckler Foundation, sees the current figure as a signal for the collective bargaining cycles of the coming years. In his assessment, the real wage increase is above the long-term average but below the stronger values reached immediately after the high-inflation years of 2023 and 2024.

Reactions from Academia and Statistics

Robert Meyer, spokesperson of the Federal Statistical Office, emphasized that the calculation is based on the quarterly earnings surveys and takes seasonal effects into account. An initial estimate may still change slightly once further data become available.

Destatis points out that the real wage statistics methodologically relate the gross earnings of employees to the consumer price index. Tax and contribution burdens are not taken into account, which is why personal purchasing power may vary depending on income and family status.

For the coming quarters, economic observers expect the trend to continue, provided inflation does not rise significantly. Should price increases pick up again, the real wage lead could quickly diminish.

Overall, economic researchers assess the increase positively but see a continuing need for action in below-average-paying industries. The upcoming collective bargaining negotiations, for example in the metal and electrical industry, are regarded as an important benchmark.
