Rear-end collision at pedestrian crossing in Lienz: 18-year-old pedestrian injured

Among other things, they are investigating how fast the rear-ending car was traveling and whether all occupants were wearing seatbelts. According to police, the rear-ending vehicle was a car driven by an Austrian woman who was also just 18 years old. According to the information, she was traveling with two female passengers of the same age from the Mittereggerkreuz roundabout heading east when the collision occurred.

At the time of the incident, in addition to the injured pedestrian and the cyclist, several young women aged 18 were in the immediate vicinity of the accident site. Following the on-site work, police asked any additional potential witnesses to come forward.

Demands for more safety

The investigations into the exact course of the rear-end collision are ongoing. Only after the completion of the inquiries and any possible expert report will it become clear what consequences — for example, in criminal or administrative law terms — the authorities will draw from the incident.

On the B 100, there have been repeated, sometimes serious, traffic accidents in recent years, which is why the police are reminding the public to maintain the appropriate safety distance and to exercise particular caution in the area of pedestrian crossings.

Experts point out that rear-end collisions at pedestrian crossings are particularly dangerous because pedestrians stand unprotected on the roadway there. Anyone who stops to let someone cross must be able to rely on following vehicles stopping in time.

For Lienz's city center, this is the second serious incident at a pedestrian crossing within a short period of time. Local initiatives have long been calling for 30 km/h zones in the area of Drautal Straße in order to increase safety for pedestrians.
