Austria’s farmers are bracing for a below-average harvest after the country endured its driest March-April period since 1858, with recent rains offering only marginal relief, according to agricultural officials.
Crop Damage Already Irreversible
The Agriculture Chamber of Austria confirmed that existing damage and stunted growth in key crops like rapeseed, sugar beets, and grains cannot be reversed. "Already existing damage and growth depressions, for example in rapeseed, sugar beets, but also in cereals, can no longer be undone," the chamber stated.
Ferdinand Lembacher, Secretary General of the Agriculture Chamber, reported severe impacts on rapeseed: "The rapeseed looks terrible, it has withered extremely quickly." Wheat has also suffered, though Lembacher noted that "plant growth occurs a bit later than with rapeseed." He added, "The rain came for the wheat practically at the last minute to still allow for a somewhat decent harvest, if things go well from now on."
