Vienna, 01 July 2026

The Austrian Chamber of Agriculture (LKÖ) forecasts this year's grain harvest nationwide at 2.7 million tonnes excluding maize, a decline of 15 percent compared to the previous year, as Chamber President Josef Moosbrugger announced on Wednesday in Vienna.

The balance is thus significantly worse than in recent years. Weather conditions during the autumn sowing in 2025 had been changeable, after which partially very dry winter months had taken a toll on the crops, Moosbrugger explained. Since grain copes with these conditions less well than maize, for instance, "the grain cultivation area, according to current estimates, has fallen further compared to the historic low of 2025 by 0.7 percent to below 0.5 million hectares for the first time," the LKÖ president continued.
