In Austria's 2,092 municipalities, 247 women are currently at the top, according to the Municipal Association – the highest figure ever recorded in Austria.
Record and distribution
As the Austrian Municipal Association announced on Friday on the occasion of the Mayors' and Deputy Mayors' Meeting from 12 to 14 July in Vorarlberg, the share of women among mayors is 11.9 percent. Compared to the previous year, the figure has thus risen by 2.5 percentage points. At that time, 241 women had led a municipality.
"In Austria gibt es so viele Bürgermeisterinnen wie noch nie," the Municipal Association announced. All in all, around 27 percent of all local politicians are female. Alongside the 247 mayors, around 560 deputy mayors and roughly 10,600 municipal councilors are currently active in Austria's municipalities.
