In the first half of 2026, more households in Austria than ever before switched their electricity and gas provider, as the regulatory authority E-Control announced.

According to the authority, the number of switches reached a new high. Both for electricity and gas, consumers' willingness to switch rose significantly. The authority sees this as a direct response to the geopolitical tensions of recent months and to the efforts of many households to secure favorable tariffs early.

E-Control board member Michael Strebl explained the background with a view to the upcoming heating season: „Viele Konsumenten wollen noch vor der nächsten Heizsaison möglichst günstige Strom- und Gastarife sichern." The wave of switching extended across the entire federal territory, with individual federal states showing particularly strong interest.
