The deluge inundated transport routes across the prefecture, cutting power to thousands of households and forcing the cancellation or delay of services during one of the busiest travel windows of the Japanese summer. Operators scrambled to clear waterlogged tracks and restore lines as commuters and holidaymakers tried to resume journeys that many had planned months in advance.

Local authorities in Chiba reported dozens of flooded homes, with water rising quickly in low-lying neighbourhoods. Emergency crews used pumps and sandbags to drain standing water, while residents moved belongings to upper floors and waited for levels to recede. In several cities, rivers approached or exceeded their warning banks overnight, prompting evacuation advisories.

Power outages and travel chaos

The rainfall knocked out electricity to thousands of homes in the prefecture, with the local utility dispatching repair teams once conditions were deemed safe. Power restoration proceeded in stages through Friday morning, though some customers in the hardest-hit areas were still without supply hours after the worst of the storm had passed.

By Friday afternoon, transport operators were reporting a gradual return to normal timetables on major rail lines, though secondary routes and local bus services remained affected. Obon holiday travel disrupted

The fatality was reported in the prefecture as the rain bore down, according to local officials. No further details about the victim were immediately released, and authorities said they were still assessing the full extent of damage to property and infrastructure across affected municipalities.

Meteorologists attributed the intensity of the downpour to a slow-moving band of moist air that stalled over the Kanto region, wringing out record totals in a matter of hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency urged residents to remain alert for landslides and rising water even after the most severe warnings were lifted, because saturated ground can give way without further heavy rain.

What caused the deluge

The flooding came during Japan's Obon holiday period, when millions of people travel to hometowns to visit family and ancestors. Rail operators, bus companies and airlines typically run extra services to cope with demand, but the disruption forced many travellers to delay or reroute their plans at short notice.

Prefectural officials said an initial damage survey would be completed within days, covering homes, roads, agricultural land and public facilities.
