Buenos Aires, June 12, 2026
At the Argentine research station Esperanza Base in Antarctica, a temperature of 15.4 degrees Celsius was recorded on June 6 – the highest temperature ever measured on the continent in any June.
A record that stands out
As Argentina's national weather service announced on Thursday, a temperature of 15.4 degrees Celsius was measured at the Esperanza Base research station on June 6. This exceeded the previous June record for Antarctica from 1998, which stood at 13.3 degrees, by several degrees. "So hoch sei das Thermometer in der Antarktis zuvor noch nie geklettert," the statement said.
The highest June temperature of all time has been measured in Antarctica. The continent, usually regarded as a synonym for extreme cold, recorded a value more reminiscent of a mild spring day in Central Europe. Meteorologists consider the measurement a clear signal.
