Red Bull Salzburg signs Polish midfielder Bartosz Mazurek from Jagiellonia Białystok

The transfer continues Salzburg's well-established recruitment strategy of identifying young players from neighbouring and emerging European leagues and developing them within their system. Mazurek fits that template as a technically gifted, attack-minded midfielder who has already faced senior international competition.

Mann, Salzburg's managing director of sport, framed the signing in characteristically measured terms. "Mit ihm konnten wir einen talentierten, technisch gut ausgebildeten und gegen den Ball sehr fleißigen Spieler verpflichten, der auch schon einiges an Erfahrung auf hohem Niveau gesammelt hat," the club quoted him as saying. He added: "Ich bin überzeugt, dass er bei uns seinen Weg machen wird."

European pedigree on show

Mann's confidence is rooted in part in Mazurek's European pedigree. The Pole caught the wider footballing public's eye in February when he scored a hat-trick in Jagiellonia's 4-2 away win over AC Fiorentina in the UEFA Conference League, a performance that underlined his capacity to deliver on a continental stage.

For Salzburg, the deal also addresses a structural need in their squad. The club cycled through several midfield options last season and has been open about wanting to refresh that department with younger profiles who can be moulded in the club's style of play.

Mazurek is the latest in a series of arrivals announced by the Salzburg hierarchy in recent weeks, as the club prepares for the opening of pre-season training and the early rounds of European qualification. Salzburg will be involved in the Champions League qualifying rounds and, depending on results, the Europa League or Conference League phases.

What comes next for Mazurek

The Polish international will join his new teammates in the coming days and is expected to be eased into the squad during the preparatory period before competitive action resumes. Salzburg have not disclosed the length of the contract or the transfer fee.

Jagiellonia Białystok, for their part, lose one of their most promising academy graduates. The club said in their own statement that they had reached an agreement with Salzburg and wished Mazurek well in the next phase of his career.

Speaking briefly after the announcement, Mazurek thanked Jagiellonia for his development and said he was looking forward to the challenge of playing in Austria and in European competition. Salzburg plan to present the player to the media later this week.
