In Slovakia, a referendum on the reintroduction of a Special Prosecutor's Office and the National Crime Agency has clearly missed the necessary quorum of more than 50 percent turnout, according to initial counts.

Background of the Vote

After 82 percent of polling stations were counted, insufficient voter turnout of just 15 percent emerged. For the referendum to have been valid, turnout of more than 50 percent would have been required. The referendum is expected to be declared invalid.

The plebiscite was initiated by the Party of Democrats, which is not represented in parliament. It had launched a petition and collected more than 350,000 valid signatures in order to make the vote on the Special Prosecutor's Office and the National Crime Agency possible in the first place. The Party of Democrats is in opposition to Fico's government.
