Slovenia's parliament elected conservative leader Janez Janša as prime minister on Friday, marking his fourth term in office.

In a secret ballot, Janša received 51 votes in the 90-seat National Assembly, surpassing the required absolute majority of 46. Thirty-six lawmakers voted against his appointment, while 87 of 90 members participated in the vote.

"Today a step was made toward a more successful and freer Slovenia," Janša told lawmakers to applause after the result was announced by parliamentary speaker Zoran Stevanović.

The 67-year-old leader of the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) will lead a minority government with support from smaller conservative parties and the anti-EU Resni.ca party, which has promised to be a "hard opposition" rather than join the coalition.
