Vienna, July 15, 2026

The umbrella organization of social insurance providers presented its first Remedies Report 2026 on Wednesday. According to the report, expenditure on remedies stood at 4.9 billion euros in 2025, and the number of pharmacy locations in Austria reached a new record high of 2,251.

The social insurance system's costs for the provision of remedies rose to 4.9 billion euros in 2025. As the Remedies Report 2026, presented for the first time on Wednesday by the umbrella organization of social insurance providers, shows, this represents an increase of 7.5 percent compared to 2024 and of 88.2 percent compared to the year 2013. Per person who received at least one medication at the expense of health insurance in 2025, expenditure averaged around 800 euros.

The rise in expenditure alongside a simultaneous decline in the number of prescriptions is explained, according to the report, among other things, by the fact that more and more inexpensive medications fall below the prescription fee of 7.55 euros. In 2025 there were 106 million prescriptions; in 2013 there were still 122 million. In total, 68 percent of eligible persons received at least one medication at the expense of health insurance in 2025.
