Salvage teams have begun an operation off the coast of Oman to contain a leaking tanker linked to Russia's shadow fleet, after satellite analysis showed an oil slick near the Al Hallaniyat archipelago expanding to roughly 230 square miles.
The spill, first detected in late July, has grown rapidly through the first week of August. Greenpeace's analysis of satellite imagery, published on 4 August, found the slick covered approximately 230 square miles (600 square kilometers) near the Al Hallaniyat islands, describing the expansion as 'a fourfold increase over just the last two days.'
The vessel at the centre of the response is part of a fleet of aging tankers used to circumvent Western sanctions and price caps on Russian crude exports. Such ships typically operate with limited insurance, flag-of-convenience registrations and aging hulls, raising the risk of environmental incidents in busy shipping corridors.
