Seebarn am Wagram, 13 July 2026

Researchers from the Austrian Ornithological Centre, an institution of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, have installed around 200 nesting boxes for the little owl in the vineyards around Seebarn am Wagram, thereby supporting a population increase to approximately 400 breeding pairs in Austria.

The Austrian Ornithological Centre operates a targeted species conservation programme for the little owl, Athene noctua in Latin, at its Seebarn am Wagram site in the Weinviertel near Krems. As Richard Zink, head of the Seebarn am Wagram field station, explains, nesting boxes mounted on metal poles at a height of around three and a half metres have been placed in the vineyards in this part of the Weinviertel near Krems for several years now. The boxes were specially developed based on an idea from a colleague in Burgenland to protect them against stone martens.
