A team led by the Vienna Boku researcher Sven Fuchs and Margreth Keiler from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in Innsbruck is advocating, in light of devastating wildfires such as those near Los Angeles, for a strategic approach to building protection that can measurably reduce risks.

The major fires in California near Los Angeles last year left tens of thousands of buildings at the mercy of the flames and claimed at least 29 lives, write the team around Sven Fuchs from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Boku) Vienna and Margreth Keiler from the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in Innsbruck in the journal "Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences". Images went viral of a single house that had apparently survived the "Pacific Palisades" disaster relatively unscathed.
