Researchers from the University of Greifswald and Australian colleagues have described a spider species of the genus Propostira in the journal "Current Biology" that specifically preys on weaver ants of the species Oecophylla smaragdina using a catapult-like capture web.

The study presents a capture system that accelerates prey to up to 4.4 meters per second and, according to the team, belongs to the most powerful biomechanical constructions documented in the animal kingdom to date. The "The performance values achieved here exceed by several orders of magnitude what muscles alone could produce."
