Almost a year after the fatal train accident in Riedlingen in the Biberach district, the Federal Railway Accident Investigation Agency in Bonn has confirmed that a landslide following heavy rain caused the derailment.
On July 27, 2025, a regional train derailed near a district of Riedlingen in the Biberach district. The train was traveling from Sigmaringen to Ulm. Shortly before the accident, there had been a severe storm with heavy rainfall in the region.
Course of the Accident
As the Federal Railway Accident Investigation Agency in Bonn determined in a report, the accident was triggered by a landslide caused by heavy rainfall. "Der Unfall sei durch einen Hangrutsch infolge von Starkregen ausgelöst worden, heißt es in einem Bericht der Bundesstelle für Eisenbahnunfalluntersuchung in Bonn." Police and prosecutors had suspected this cause shortly after the accident.
