Following the New York Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years, violent riots erupted in Manhattan in the night leading into Sunday, resulting in 63 arrests, a 17-year-old being shot, and a bus being set on fire.

Historic title after a long wait

The Knicks had won Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 on Saturday evening, claiming their first title since 1973. Thousands of fans subsequently poured into the streets around Madison Square Garden and Times Square to celebrate the triumph.

What initially began as an exuberant victory celebration descended into violence in parts of Manhattan. Rioters set fire to at least one yellow school bus at Times Square that had been used as a shuttle for soccer fans headed to the World Cup match between Brazil and Morocco at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. In total, several buses were damaged at Times Square.
