Vancouver, July 3, 2026

The Algerian attacking player Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from the national team immediately after his team's 0:2 loss in the World Cup match against Switzerland in Vancouver.

Retirement at the pitchside

Mahrez spoke right at the pitchside after his team's elimination and declared: „Das war mein letztes Spiel für Algerien.“ The 35-year-old had already been part of the Algerian squad at the 2014 World Cup, where he featured in the round of 16 against Germany, which was lost 1:2 after extra time against the eventual world champions.

At the tournament in North America, Mahrez was once again part of the Algerian squad. In the group stage, he scored two goals in the 3:3 draw against Austria, before the team's campaign ended in the knockout round against Switzerland.
