Rob Jetten opens World Pride in Amsterdam with appeal to come out

World Pride is the international edition of Christopher Street Day and is taking place this year in the Dutch capital. The festival was opened with the Canal Parade, in which colorful boats travel through Amsterdam's canals. Amsterdam's Mayor Femke Halsema is also among the political voices accompanying the event.

Alongside Jetten and Halsema, other speakers took to the stage, including representatives from CSD organizations. The organizers expected hundreds of thousands of visitors from the Netherlands and abroad. The Canal Parade is considered one of the best-known gay city festivals in the world and traditionally marks the start of Pride Week.

With his appeal to people who have not yet come out, Jetten made a political statement. In the Netherlands, the LGBTIQ community has enjoyed broad legal recognition for years, yet those affected still face discrimination, according to activists. Jetten pointed out that visibility requires courage but can also encourage others.

Security and organization

Security arrangements around the event were a topic in the preparations. No details were given. The Canal Parade, known in Dutch as the Bootskorso, runs from the Oosterdok to the Amstel. Visitors gather along the route on bridges and banks. Boats with music, dance, and political messages make their way through the city center. The atmosphere is considered exuberant, peaceful, and family-friendly.

International guests and protests

International guests, including delegations from Berlin and other European cities, traveled to World Pride. The German capital, which has itself hosted a Pride in earlier years, sent its own representatives. Representatives of European institutions and human rights organizations were also present.

Activists used the opening stage to highlight the situation in countries where homosexuality is criminally prosecuted. They called on the international community to better protect LGBTIQ refugees and to exert diplomatic pressure on the governments in question.

The program announced concerts, panel discussions, and cultural events spanning several days. According to the organizers, World Pride is set to continue making stops in different locations worldwide over the next decade. Amsterdam sees itself as the stage of a cosmopolitan tradition.
