Cottbus, 11 July 2026

Ahead of Christopher Street Day in Cottbus, Brandenburg's Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) expressed his respect to the participants in a press release from the State Chancellery and, following a series of suspected right-wing extremist attacks, called for decisive action against hatred and inhumanity.

Background to the security concerns

The afternoon demonstration in Cottbus took place under heightened security measures, according to the organizers. Because of the recent incidents, the organizers had asked participants, among other things, to organize themselves in groups, to avoid conspicuous clothing while traveling, and to stay away from dark corners.

In the release, Woidke said that recognition was due to all those who stood up for diversity, tolerance, and an open society in Cottbus. In his exact words, he said: „Allen, die heute beim CSD in Cottbus für Vielfalt, Toleranz und eine offene Gesellschaft auf die Straße gehen, gilt mein aufrichtiger Dank und mein großer Respekt."

At the same time, Woidke pointed to the incidents of recent weeks. It was „wichtiger denn je, Haltung zu zeigen und Rechtsextremismus, Hass sowie Menschenfeindlichkeit entschlossen entgegenzutreten", the Minister-President said.
